Enchilada Sauce Recipe: A Taste of Mexican Cuisine
When it comes to Mexican cuisine, the first things that come to my mind are spices, peppers, colorful plates and sauces. One of the most popular dishes of this cuisine, enchilada, also has its own indispensable sauce. Enchilada sauce is a very delicious and aromatic sauce used not only in this dish but also in many different recipes. Thanks to its practical preparation and intense flavor, you can now create a Mexican atmosphere at home.
Red Enchilada Sauce
It is a red colored, thick sauce, usually prepared with tomatoes, peppers, garlic and various spices. The harmony of the spices and the quality of the ingredients used directly affect the flavor of the sauce.
There are two main versions of the sauce: red enchilada sauce and green enchilada sauce. The red one is the more classic and common. It is usually made with dried red peppers such as ancho, guajillo or pasilla. Of course, we will make our sauce in the most practical way by using chili peppers. (Since I can’t find these pepper varieties where I live, I had to make the recipe according to the ingredients I have.) The green version is made with tomatillo (green tomato), jalapeño and cilantro. In this recipe, we will make the red enchilada sauce.

Ways to Use Enchilada Sauce
You don’t have to use this sauce just for enchiladas. You can also use it on tacos, burritos, nachos, and even eggs or rice. It’s especially great in oven dishes or with sautéed vegetables.
- Oven Meals: You can prepare a practical dinner by pouring it over chicken or ground meat and baking it.
- As Pasta Sauce: Try pasta with enchilada sauce instead of classic tomato sauce.
- Wraps and Burritos: Put chicken, Mexican beans and corn in lavash. Pour plenty of sauce on top and wrap. Pour the sauce on the burritos you make. Sprinkle some grated cheese and put in the oven.
- Sautéed Vegetables: Try sautéing vegetables such as zucchini, peppers and pouring enchilada sauce on top.
